Exam tips for HSK 6
At HSK 6 the exam is long and dense, so stamina and technique matter alongside language.

- When summarising, write key points first, then connect them in your own words.
- Collect useful formal structures from articles and reuse them in your essays.
- Train listening with interviews and talk shows, not only scripted material.

The 2025 HSK 3.0 exam syllabus lists 5,400 words for HSK 6 (cumulative). The old HSK 6 had 5,000.
Is HSK 6 the highest level?
Not any more. HSK 3.0 has nine levels; HSK 6 is the top of the intermediate band, and the advanced band (HSK 7–9) is tested in one combined exam.
How long does it take to go from HSK 5 to HSK 6?
A typical estimate is 400–600 additional hours, or about twelve to eighteen months of steady study with lots of authentic reading and listening.
Should I take HSK 6 or HSK 7–9?
If you can comfortably handle HSK 6 material and need proof of professional-level Chinese, consider HSK 7–9. Otherwise, a strong HSK 6 result is often more useful than a weak advanced result.
