HSK 5 is where Chinese starts to feel like a working language: you read real articles, follow TV programmes and give structured talks. What HSK 5 means
At HSK 5 you can read newspaper and magazine articles on general topics, follow films and TV programmes, and give a reasonably structured talk or presentation. You can express opinions in detail, argue for and against a position, and write longer texts in a more formal style.
Some master's programmes taught in Chinese ask for HSK 5 or higher, and many employers see it as the point where Chinese becomes genuinely usable at work. As always, check the exact level and score each programme requires.
- Read articles, reports and longer stories on general topics
- Follow TV, films, podcasts and talks at natural speed on familiar subjects
- Give a structured presentation and take part in discussions
- Write emails, summaries and short essays in a formal register
- Use common idioms (成语) and set phrases appropriately
HSK 5 exam format
HSK 5 has about 72 written questions and takes about 110 minutes in total (including instructions), plus a speaking test. Writing at this level means longer production — expect to write connected paragraphs rather than single sentences. Under the transition guidance from test centres, HSK 5 corresponds to advanced-level speaking under the former HSKK.

- Formal connectors: 以及, 并且, 从而, 何况
- Change and development with 随着…

- Treating something as something with 以…为…
- Viewpoints with 对…来说 and 在…看来
- Surprise and estimation: 居然, 竟然, 似乎, 简直
- Written-style words: 其, 之, 所 + verb, 难以
- Common four-character idioms (成语) in context
How long it takes: a sample study plan
From the HSK 4 range, plan roughly 300–450 additional hours — about nine to twelve months at eight to ten hours a week. At this level, input volume (reading and listening to authentic material) is as important as studying the word list.
| Phase | Months (about 8 h/week) | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1–4 | Daily reading of graded and authentic articles; vocabulary with spaced review |
| 2 | 5–8 | Podcasts, news and TV; weekly essays with teacher feedback; discussion practice |
| 3 | 9–12 | Full mock tests, writing under time limits, speaking simulations |

Exam tips for HSK 5
HSK 5 is as much about speed as about knowledge.
- Build reading speed with timed practice: skim for structure first, then read for detail.
- Learn whole phrases and collocations, such as 采取措施 or 引起注意, not just single words.
- Plan essays before writing: a clear outline saves time and improves structure.
- Use a small set of reliable formal connectors correctly rather than many incorrectly.
- Practise speaking to a timer so that you can fill the time without long pauses.
