What HSK 2 means
At HSK 2 you can handle short, routine exchanges on familiar topics: your daily routine, hobbies, transport and directions, health, the weather and simple plans. You can link sentences with words such as 因为 (because) and 但是 (but), and talk about things you have done before.
The level adds about 200 words to HSK 1, for a cumulative total of 500 in the 2025 exam syllabus. It is also the level where you begin to write characters yourself.
- Describe your day, your hobbies and your plans in a few connected sentences
- Ask for and give simple directions and transport information
- Compare things with 比 and give reasons with 因为…所以…
- Talk about past experiences with 过
- Write a set of common characters by hand
HSK 2 exam format
HSK 2 has three sections and about 60 questions, with a testing time of about 60 minutes in total (including instructions). The writing section is short, but you need to produce characters accurately, so it is worth practising handwriting or typing from the start of your preparation.
| Section | Questions | Time | Typical tasks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 25 | about 17 min | Pictures and short dialogues; true or false; questions about what you hear |
| Reading | 25 | 25 min | Matching, gap-filling and short reading comprehension |
| Writing | 10 | 10 min | Short tasks such as writing the missing character or completing a sentence |
| Speaking | — | — | Not tested at HSK 2 |

HSK 2 vocabulary: 500 words
HSK 2 adds connecting words (因为, 所以, 但是), prepositions of place and direction (从, 离, 往), common verbs of daily life, words for health, colours, transport and leisure, and the particles 着 and 过. Syllabus summaries mention roughly 370 characters to recognise and about 100 to write.
Because many HSK 2 words combine characters you already know from HSK 1 (for example 机场 airport, 车站 station), review HSK 1 characters as you go. The sample below comes from the HSK 2 list.

How long it takes: a sample study plan
If you already have the HSK 1 range, plan roughly 50–90 additional hours for HSK 2 — about two to four months at five to six hours a week. Start writing characters early, ten minutes a day, so the writing section does not become a last-minute problem.
| Phase | Weeks (about 5 h/week) | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1–4 | New vocabulary by topic; 过, 着 and 比; daily handwriting |
| 2 | 5–8 | Listening with natural dialogues; reading short texts; sentence patterns |
| 3 | 9–12 | Writing practice, full mock tests and review of weak areas |

Exam tips for HSK 2
The jump from HSK 1 to HSK 2 is mostly about longer listening items and the new writing tasks.
- Write every new character by hand at least a few times, following the stroke order.
- Learn words in pairs that are easy to confuse, such as 左边 and 右边 or 已经 and 经常.
- In reading, look at the words around a gap: measure words and particles often reveal the answer.
- Listen to short dialogues at natural speed, not only slowed-down textbook audio.
- Time yourself on the writing section — ten minutes passes quickly.
