HSK 3: Vocabulary, Speaking Test and Exam Preparation
HSK 3 completes the elementary band and is the first level where speaking is part of the exam. With 1,000 words in the HSK 3.0 syllabus, it marks the point where you can communicate about everyday life, study and work in simple connected Chinese. This guide explains the level, the exam, sample vocabulary, key grammar and a study plan.

What HSK 3 means
At HSK 3 you can communicate in simple, connected sentences about everyday life, study and work, deal with most situations when travelling, and speak for a short time about familiar topics. You can follow the main points of clear, slow speech and read short texts on familiar subjects.
HSK 3 is often the first level that opens doors. For example, some 2026 scholarship programmes for a semester or a year of language study in China asked for HSK 3 with a minimum score, together with an HSKK result. Requirements change every year, so always read the current rules.
- Talk about your experiences, plans and opinions in a few connected sentences
- Handle travel, shopping, appointments and simple problems
- Tell a short story or describe an event in order (first, then, finally)
- Read short notices, messages and simple articles
- Write short sentences and simple messages by hand or by typing
HSK 3 exam format
The written part of HSK 3 has about 70 questions across listening, reading and writing and takes about 85 minutes in total (including instructions). From level 3, HSK 3.0 also includes a speaking test; in the first trial sittings, candidates for levels 3–6 had to register for the speaking test at the same time as the written exam.
Under the old system, speaking was tested separately by the HSKK. According to test-centre guidance on the transition, HSK 3 now corresponds to elementary-level speaking.

HSK 3 vocabulary: 1,000 words
HSK 3 doubles your vocabulary to 1,000 words. Many of the 500 new words are abstract or linking words — 如果 (if), 而且 (moreover), 其实 (actually), 影响 (influence) — that let you explain and connect ideas. Syllabus summaries mention about 650 characters to recognise and 250 to write.
At this level it pays to learn word families: once you know 解决 (solve) and 办法 (method), phrases like 解决办法 (solution) come for free. The sample below is taken from the HSK 3 list.

Preparing for the speaking test
Speaking is where many HSK 3 candidates lose confidence, simply because they have not practised enough out loud. Aim for answers of several connected sentences, not single words, and work on clear tones so the examiner can follow you easily.
- Prepare short answers on common topics: yourself, your city, your studies or job, hobbies, travel.
- Use linking words — 因为, 所以, 然后, 而且 — to build longer answers.
- Record yourself and check your tones, or use AI tone feedback.
- Practise with a teacher who asks follow-up questions, as an examiner might.
How long it takes: a sample study plan
From the HSK 2 range, plan roughly 120–180 additional hours — about five to eight months at five to six hours a week. Spread speaking practice across the whole period instead of leaving it to the end.
| Phase | Weeks (about 6 h/week) | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1–8 | New vocabulary in context; 把, 被 and complements; weekly speaking topics |
| 2 | 9–16 | Longer listening and reading; sentence-building for the writing section |
| 3 | 17–24 | Mock tests including speaking; error review; exam timing |

Frequently asked questions
How many words do I need for HSK 3?
The 2025 HSK 3.0 exam syllabus lists 1,000 words for HSK 3 (cumulative), about 500 more than HSK 2. The old HSK 3 had 600 words.
Does HSK 3 include a speaking test?
Yes. In HSK 3.0, speaking is part of the exam from level 3. Check your test centre's notice for how the speaking test is scheduled and registered.
How long does it take to reach HSK 3?
From zero, many adult learners need roughly 230–370 hours of study in total. From the HSK 2 range, plan about 120–180 more hours. These are typical estimates, not official figures.
Is HSK 3 good enough for a job?
HSK 3 shows you can handle everyday communication. It can help for roles with some Chinese contact, but most jobs that use Chinese daily expect HSK 4–5 or higher.
Is the new HSK 3 harder than the old one?
It covers more words (1,000 instead of 600) and adds speaking, so most learners will need more preparation than for the old HSK 3.
